Retro cutting-edge—poised between traditionalism and futurism—Pieff was the must-have name in high-end British furniture in the 1960s and ’70s. Based in Lye in the West Midlands, UK, Tim Bates ran the innovative cabinetmaking company Pieff with his two sons. The three expert craftsmen designed and produced bespoke furniture in fine materials. The style is rather Hollywood Regency. The stunning combination of Brazilian rosewood and mirrored chrome found in the Mandarin series is a trademark of the workshop, as are the clean modern lines and glossy glamorous finish. The firm dissolved in the late 1980s, but until that point they were the market leader in luxury home décor with lines sold in exclusive shops such as Heals and Harrods.
